As one ski season ends we ready ourselves for another … The snow is melting and the white cover is shrinking to reveal the plants that have been suppressed until now. They bounce back with vigour over the last days of the snow season. Season end brings many good-byes as well as the anticipation of the next – for us – Japan!

Three discoveries about flexible lifestyles

This photo was the last day of the 2015 ski season at Mt Hotham. Shrinking snow and rich sunsets signalling the end of another winter as the population of the village shrinks. People return to other places and other parts of their lives, lodges are cleaned and closed.

One of the lodge manager stalwarts at Mt Hotham is Liz Hanger. In her third season now, it is hard to believe her initial reaction to a suggestion of working in a ski resort was – “oh … I think I’m passed that!” Instead she has done just that, turning her new vocation into her vacation.
