Winter is on its way. Hooray! We love it. The white stuff has started falling. The days are shortening. Monsieur Contrôleur tunes his skis and our snow community will soon reunite.

The imminent arrival of winter is such a delight when summer and warmth are our dominant experience. We missed a northern winter and so having been anticipating this seasonal change and looking forward to it for some time. And so, I feel the need for some poetry. Its origins are the northern hemisphere but the sentiments are the same. Enjoy!

January by John Updike

The days are short,
The sun a spark,
Hung thin between
The dark and dark.

Fat snowy footsteps
Track the floor.
Milk bottles burst
Outside the door.

The river is
A frozen place
Held still beneath
The trees of lace.

The sky is low.
The wind is gray.
The radiator
Purrs all day.
